Wild horses on the range with dust devil and salt pan in the background

This guide to Tonopah, Nevada will give you a unique look at the town that was part of one of the richest silver strikes in the West and the beauty of the surrounding high desert of the Great Basin.

Tonopah is located almost equal distances between the cities of Reno and Las Vegas on Route 95, about 3 to 4 hours drive from either city. Tonopah is also located less than a 30-minute drive from the famous Tonopah Test Range, home of the "Stealth" bomber and less than a 2-hour drive from Rachel, Nevada and the mysterious "Area 51."

Hundreds of miles of open range invite the novice and experienced "desert rat" to explore and observe Tonopah's unspoiled desert wonderland of exotic flora and fauna. For the angler, Tonopah offers Walker Lake, stream fishing in the Humboldt-Toiyabe national forest 60 miles away and nearby Sportsman's Park. The Tonopah Speedway hosts amateur and professional stock car racing and demolition derbies. There are two casinos, several restaurants and two taverns.

Being in the high desert at around 6.000 feet, Tonopah has moderate temperatures and a pleasant climate. The weather is very changeable with brief showers and windstorms occurring from time to time.
